Description : Composizione naturalistica

Mixed media on paper. Signed and dated lower left. The Turin artist Mario Sturani joined the Futurist Movement in his youth. From 1927 he began his collaboration with the Lenci ceramics factory, where he was able to renew the formal and decorative repertoire of Lenci ceramics in an anti-rhetorical key, avoiding the stylistic features of the art of the regime. Even in the field of serial reproduction, Sturani was able to express the inventive freedom of artistic inspiration: on the surfaces of the vases, for example, he transposed the naturalistic subjects dear to him, sometimes transfiguring them into fabulous tones; in other cases a certain déco taste, the dynamic rhythms of Futurist ancestry or the cubist decompositions, like the elegant twentieth century stylizations. Between 1928 and 1930 Sturani painted a series of small paintings, with intimate tones, depicting landscapes or still lifes. For over thirty years Sturani also worked as an entomologist, within the Institute of Agricultural Entomology of the Turin university, and his studies were also widely appreciated by the academic world for the scientific value and the methodological rigor with which they were conducted. . The small drawing presented here belongs to the early production of Sturani, even before the collaboration with the Lenci manufacture. In this small drawing from his early years, Sturani is still affected by his closeness to futurism. In frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Mario Sturani (1906-1978)

Born in Ancona in 1906, Mario Sturani follows his family to Turin where he completes his high school studies. He joined the Futurist Movement and, while still a student, in 1923 he began to exhibit (under the pseudonym of Ivan Benzina) at the I Mostra del Secondo Futurismo in Turin and participated in the Second National Art Exhibition in Foligno where he obtained the second prize in the white and black. In 1924 he moved to Monza where for three years he attended the Higher Institute of Decorative Arts, graduating in 1927. In the same year he opened a studio in Turin and began his collaboration with the Turin ceramic manufacturer Lenci for which he created numerous works. Due to his extraordinary inventive wealth, the artist will be one of the main collaborators of the Turin company. In 1930 he designed furniture for the Beccaris company and exhibited at the IV Triennale of Monza; he also dedicates himself to the figurative arts, making his debut as a set designer and advertising graphic designer. In the same year he went to Paris, where he stayed for two years, collaborated with Vogue and came into contact with the artistic group of Lionello Venturi, a political refugee. In 1932 he returned to Turin and, after having collaborated as an illustrator with the Frassinelli publishing house, he resumed his relationship with Lenci where in 1940 he will have the position of Artistic Director and will remain active until 1964. From 1952 to 1954 he collaborated with the Pioneer, publishing illustrated tables and scientific articles of considerable importance. Sturani was also a talented entomologist, and carried out this activity for thirty years at the Institute of Agricultural Entomology of the Turin university, carrying out studies widely appreciated also by the academic world for the scientific value and the methodological rigor with which they were conducted.
