Description

Pair of large eclectic mirrors in carved and gilded wood, which belonged to the Sicilian Reforgiato family, Catania third quarter of the 19th century. Cimasa composed of phytomorphic spirals, in the center of which stands the heraldic coat of arms of the Reforgiato family: "twin lowered in a blue band on silver, red flame placed on the twin surmounted by a gold crown and a red comet tail placed on the right in band."; the coat of arms, placed between "C" and curl elements, has a crown at the apex symbolizing the noble title of baron. From the cymatium there are floral festoons falling on the sides, while the shaped frame is embellished with a fret pattern of acanthus leaves inserted between the mouldings. The decorative apparatus is completed by foliaceous tufts placed at the lower ends. Bevelled mirrors.

A baron Dr. Gaetano was pro-conservator in Militello from 1786 to 1800. With Ministerial Decree 20 May 1901 Mr. Vincenzo, of Antonio di Gaetano, born in Militello on 20 July 1847, obtained recognition of the title of baron of Linziti. The family is registered in the Golden Book of Italian Nobility and in the Official List of Linziti, in the person of Vincenzo, Antonio and Gaetano."

Towards the end of the 19th century, the taste for the combination of elements taken from various styles of the past asserted itself. The eclectic style is therefore characterized by the mixture of stylistic features of the Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, Neoclassicism in search of elegant compositional virtuosity.
