19th CENTURY PAINTINGS
 

Oil painting on canvas. 19th century European school. In the style of Neoclassicism, the painting offers a landscape with the remains of a classical temple, in which figures in ancient Greek or Roman style clothes are placed, sitting and listening to the elderly man who discusses and teaches. This type of painting was intended to represent the idealization of ancient Italy, portraying its classical vestiges. The painting has been relined; has a marked crack.

Oil painting on canvas. 19th century European school. In the style of Neoclassicism, the painting shows a Nordic landscape with a small column holding the herm of the god Bacchus: at his feet a girl, dressed in the classical style, offers flowers to the god, according to a ritual of classical antiquity, propitiatory to the marriage. This type of neoclassical painting wanted to represent the idealization of ancient Italy, portraying its classical vestiges. The painting has been relined; has a marked crack.

Chromolithography on paper, enriched by silver metal applications that define the halos of the Virgin and Child. The oval lithograph is also placed in a display case which is also exquisitely enriched with silver and gilded metal inserts, which define further frames with purely floral motif decorations. The representation presents the Madonna holding the rosary crown in her hand and the Baby Jesus in her arms, flanked on the sides by two saints of the Dominican order. The further frame with glass is made of wood with golden carvings.

Oil painting on canvas. Northern European school of the late 19th century. Unidentified signature lower right. The portrait presents a child in a maritime context: he is sitting on a rock on a beach, by the sea, he is dressed like a sailor and is holding a small toy sailing ship in his hand. The child is rather prim and serious. The painting has slight tears in the canvas and color stains. It is presented in an imposing late 19th century frame, with several missing and damaged plaster decorations.

The Joachim Quartet 1904

Etching. Signed lower right; additional signature and date on the top corner of the sheet music. This is a famous portrait taken by the Viennese photographer and engraver Ferdinand Schmutzer, of the musical quartet directed by maestro Joseph Joachim (1831 -1907), famous Hungarian violinist, composer and conductor. Among the famous portraits painted by Schmutzer are those of Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud and Richard Strauss. The work is presented in a frame.

Madonna with Child

Oil on hardboard. Signed lower right. Francesco Mazzucchi, an artist originally from the Pavia area and active in Lombardy, dedicated himself mainly to sacred art, leaving his works in some churches in the Vigevano area. Proposed here is this delicate and tender depiction of the Madonna with Child, in the colors and scene, which sees mother and son in a moment of domestic intimacy, intent on playing with the pigeons in the garden. In frame.

Under glass painting. The work appears to be composed of an engraving applied to the glass and painted on the back. Saint Peter the Apostle is depicted, intent on prayer and listening to the divine voice that comes from the open heavens above him; according to traditional iconography Peter has with him a bunch of keys, a sign of his investiture as the first head of the church, and a cockerel, which instead recalls the episode of Jesus' denial: Christ had predicted to him that during his Passion, before the rooster had crowed, Peter would have denied him three times, and so it was.

Wooden sculptures. It is a composition of two wooden heads, a male one and a female one, placed on a board and framed by a gilded frame of 19th century. The heads might had been the handles of a canteran of 17th century.

Oil on canvas. It probably depicts a tragic anti-Semitic event. On the right, a wounded soldier in Russian uniform is witnessing the dramatic scene of a slaughtered family while the rabbi is preying for them. The broken window and the upside down drawers make clear that the killers broke into the house. On the left of the mirror, there is a Jewish writing that may suggest the location. The word may be translated as 'Ciro' and may be referring to the areas of Georgia and Azerbaijan near the Kura (river flowing from Turkey to the Caspian Sea, known as 'Ciro' in 1800s). The painting, restored and relined, is presented in a frame of the 1800s.

Penci, charcoal and white lead on paper. Signed E. Bianchi at the bottom left. Very effective is the use of different pigments that creates a play of chiaroscuri that underlines the figure. The portrait comes in a 19th century wooden frame decorated with leather leafy and floral inserts; it shows small color drops and missing parts.

Pencil, charcoal and white lead on paper. SIgned (Amalia Bianche?) and dated at the bottom right. Very effective is the use of different pigments that creat a play of chiaroscuri underlined by the figures. The portrait come in a 19th century wooden frame that had been embellished with leather floral and leafy inserts. It shows small drops of color and missing parts.

Pastoral Scenes

Oil on panel. Decorated with pastoral scenes on a monochromatic light green background, with couples, children, farmers depicted during moments of rest and conversation, in the guise of the models from the 18th century. Probably wooden panels from the doors of furniture, the paintings have been recently mounted on wooden frames. They present some paint losses and spots, especially where the background is.

Oil on canvas. Eastern European School. Signed Szego G. below. These are two works to be proposed aligned because they depict a boy and a girl lying on the same lawn in a mirrored position, as if facing each other, probably intent on a love game: they wear gypsy clothes and have musical instruments with them - she a tambourine and him a violin - which refer to two characters of Slavic ethnicity, from the gypsy world. The whole is lively and serene. The two works are presented in styled frames.

Virgin Mary with Child 1891

Oil painting on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. The Vercellese painter Giuseppe Gennaro created sacred subjects, as well as portraits and genre scenes. Here a Madonna and Child is proposed, in which the position of Jesus evokes the Cross, which Mary helps to hold. The work is presented in a contemporary gilded frame.

Crayons on cardboard. Elegant portrait of a young lady, with a floral garland like a necklace. Presented in a contemporary golden frame.

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower left. Inside a rural kitchen, a peasant family allows themselves a moment of celebration: the father plays the mandolin, listened to by the little girl who seems to want to dance, assisted by her mother, and by the other women of the house, smiling as they carry out their domestic tasks. The production of the Neapolitan painter Giuseppe Giardiello always looked to the folklore of Neapolitan rural and peasant life, painting, with intimate and delicate tones, both scenes of domestic life and landscape views animated by figures. The work is presented in a contemporary frame.

Stable interior

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower left. The work was previously acquired at the Sotheby's auction in Milan on 10/12/2007. It was exhibited in 1991 in the exhibition "Giovanni Sottocornola. Images from a collection" held in Milan at the Silbernagl Gallery. After an initial pictorial phase dedicated to portraits and still lifes, in the 1880s Giovanni Sottocornola approached social themes, which were becoming the favorite subjects of young Lombard painters attentive to the poorest aspects of society, linked to the adoption of original artistic techniques. Sottocornola embraced the practice of pointillist painting, of which he wrote in 1895 "For now it is certain, I am convinced that there is no other painting more capable of conveying certain sensations than this one". However, this type of painting remained entirely focused on light, on its uncertain tonal vibrations, as happens in the Interior of a stable, created towards the end of the 1980s, where the plays of light and shadow play and create the effects visual in the brushstrokes of color played on a few chromatic ranges, those of browns, expressed in a wide variety of shades. The work is presented in a period frame.

Maria Dolente

Marble bas-relief. Engraved signature along the left margin. Born in Cannobbio (on Lake Maggiore), Giulio Branca was introduced to the art by the Cannobio sculptor Bergonzoli, and later attended G. Strazza's school of nude drawing and sculpture at the Brera Academy. Born in Cannobio on 13 December 1850 to Ludovico, he was introduced to art by the Cannobio sculptor Bergonzoli, and attended the school of the nude and G. Strazza's school of sculpture at the Brera Academy. He made about four hundred sculptures, including memorials, funerary monuments and portrait busts. Branca also took part, following a competition, in the completion of the high wall of the cathedral of Como, which had remained unfinished for centuries, sculpting several figures in white marble for the façade and the altar between 1897 and 1900. The work presented here is a bas-relief showing a half-bust of the grieving Madonna flanked by two pious women. It is presented in a coeval wooden frame from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
